Project Overview

The 5-Acre Food Forest Initiative transforms flood-prone areas into thriving ecosystems that mitigate flooding, restore native biodiversity, and provide sustainable food sources for the community. Designed to function like a natural forest, this project uses native plants, perennial crops, and innovative water management systems to create lasting benefits for Texans.

Student Learning

With over 50 fruit and nut trees, 100 shrubs, and ground crops, the forest will produce 10,000-15,000 lbs of food annually, providing free food for local families and food banks.

Community Support

Native plants like switchgrass, little bluestem, and elderberries will restore biodiversity, support pollinators, and create wildlife-friendly spaces.

Ecosystem Restoration

The site will feature outdoor classrooms where participants can learn about flood prevention, native ecosystems, and sustainable agriculture.

The Texas Way

Small Steps, Great Distances

When problems arise, we don’t complain and let them get worse. We come together as a team, take small steps, and move in the right direction. Every plant restored, every yard transformed, and every garden built is progress toward a better future for all Texans.

Flooding is a problem every Texan knows we face, and stopping it is at the core of our mission. This is about protecting our land, growing gardens that feed our communities, and showing that working together makes Texas stronger.

By taking action, focusing on solutions, and helping one another, we can create a stronger, more resilient Texas for generations to come. Together, we can make it happen.
